Minoterie Paulic flour mill - Assessment after one year's use of the Amylab FN.
The Minoteries Paulic quality laboratory, based in the town of Saint-Gérand in France (Brittany), has now been using the Amylab FN to measure the Hagberg falling number for over a year.
We had the opportunity to meet the laboratory manager and carry out an assessment of the experience. Find out how the Amylab has simplified the everyday work they do!
You purchased the Amylab FN in October 2017. Let's do a quick assessment after this first year of using it in your laboratory.
First of all, lets got back to October 2017. What purchase criteria did you apply when making your acquisition?
The first criterion was an economical one. The Amylab FN does not have a bain-marie, which therefore enables you to economize on water use. The second criterion was practical in nature. It doesn't need a cooling tower either, which saved us a lot of space in the laboratory. Additionally, it can be placed anywhere, unlike our previous machine, which needed to be located close to the sink.
Another very important purchase criterion: not having tubes made from glass. With our previous machine, we often had the problem of the glass tubes in the machine breaking, which meant it had to be completely dismantled so the pieces of glass could be extracted. This took a long time, as well as being quite dangerous. With the Amylab FN we no longer have this problem. And finally, the rapid Testogram function no doubt saves a significant amount of time. We haven't used it ourselves yet though. It will be used during 2019 at some point.
How often do you use the Amylab FN?
We use it every day. We do a minimum of around five to ten tests per day. We of course carry out all our own internal analyses, and we also use it for tests requested by our customers.
We analyze every batch of wheat upon receipt. In order to do this, we produce ground samples. We also analyze the flour produced by the flour mill. Every batch of flour is analyzed before being dispatched for delivery.
How would you assess the experience of using the Amylab?
We really like the machine's simplicity and ease of use. The only slight drawback is that the tube is not transparent, which caused us a little trouble at the beginning as we were accustomed to glass tubes, i.e. transparent. I therefore carefully monitored the stirring phase at the beginning. We also carried out some repeatability tests in order to reassure ourselves. We are now convinced, and much prefer it to tubes made from glass.
Are you taking part in the BIPEA interlaboratory comparison program?
Yes, absolutely. We have been participating in it with the Amylab FN since the beginning of 2018. We also monitor the alveograph and various other machines through BIPEA.
Would you now recommend purchasing the Amylab FN to others?
Yes, without hesitation. We are very happy with it. The machine is both practical and efficient! It's quick and simple to use. It takes less time to heat up in the morning. The result is automatically stored and saved. In short, it's really enabled us to make the work in the laboratory easier!
